UNDERSTANDING CHINESE TAOISM: 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Shoshin Therapies - Chinese Taoism

If you are curious about spirituality and spiritual belief systems but find them too complex or other websites and blogs discussing these topics are overly dense with words and heavy on description, then look no further. This article will condense what you need to know about Chinese Taoism into ten things and help you understand the basics of what it means when someone says they are a Taoist.

Taoism is a Map, Not a Religion

Spirituality shares much in common with a map. I would go as far as to state that spirituality is indeed a type of map. Whereas a traditional map is used to navigate us around our physical reality, spirituality is a map that guides us through our life.

Naturally, there are many different types of maps for different purposes. Some of the most common types are topographic, climate, economic, satellite, and cadastral maps. Whilst each of these maps is inherently different in how they present themselves and the information they contain, each one has validity. You make the conscious choice to work with a map that helps you to navigate best.

Spirituality and spiritual belief systems are no different. Everyone's spirituality may be slightly different or hold a different frame, but each has validity. Again, you make the conscious choice to work with beliefs that helps you to navigate through life best.

These ten things will help you understand what Chinese Taoism is about

1. Taoism is not a strict religion full of dogma and scripture. Taoism is not a religion at all. It is a map, a style of art that can guide you on your journey.

2. Our bodies form part of a much bigger body, the body of the Universe.

3. Everything is made up of energy. The same energy with us can also be found in the earth and everything in the cosmos.

4. Our thoughts and our minds form part of a bigger overall consciousness that is One with all there is.

5. When we are not in tune or are cut off from this consciousness, we are likely to experience suffering, feelings of separation, feelings of being directionless, unfulfilled, etc.

6. When we are connected to our consciousness and our place in the Universe, we are then able to be at ease and experience connection, harmony, and well-being.

7. We are birthed from Nature and are a part of the natural world. When we connect our bodies with nature, our natural health, state of being, sense of innocence, and naturalness all fall into alignment.

8. Our mind is connected to our higher states of consciousness. To access these states, we require mental peace and clarity of thought. Only then will we learn the fundamental truths of existence.

9. Taoism is a type of poetry for appreciating nature's cycles and how they relate to our health and well-being. It is a comprehensive system that you can study for a lifetime. You can dip your toes in and embrace it a little, or you can immerse yourself in it fully and apply it as a way of life.

10. Taoist sexual techniques - or Tao Tantric arts - much like traditional Tantra, apply similar principles to understand sexual energy and human sexuality, in addition to exercise techniques designed to develop the union between the masculine and the feminine.
