THE STORY OF REIKI - A SHORT HISTORY

Shoshin Therapies - History of Reiki Healing

If you have ever felt the soothing feeling of Reiki's energy, you know firsthand its healing power and how it touches your innermost being. Reiki, a gentle yet potent form of natural energy healing, has the remarkable ability to balance, cleanse, harmonize, and heal on a profound level. In this heartfelt exploration, I would like to take you into the incredible history of Reiki, a facet often overshadowed by its practice. Because to me, understanding the roots and history of Reiki is akin to knowing oneself - a crucial aspect of both giving and receiving this nurturing and powerful energy.

Appreciating the History and Heritage of Reiki

In the heartland of Japan, Reiki took its fledgling steps under the guidance of a man called Dr. Mikao Usui, a revered Japanese Buddhist priest and the visionary often referred to as the 'father' of Reiki. Born on August 15, 1865, into an esteemed samurai family, Dr. Usui's early life was graced with privilege and enriched by his education in martial arts, Buddhism, and literature.

His insatiable thirst for knowledge led him to traverse the landscapes of spirituality and religion, immersing himself in the teachings of Buddhism, Christian theology, Taoism, and divination, among others.

This diverse tapestry of learning would later weave the fabric of what would become Reiki.

Illuminating Discovery: A Journey into the Self

The account of Dr. Usui's profound encounter with Reiki is a treasured tale handed down through many generations, echoing the oral tradition that shaped Reiki's teachings.

Seeking answers to life's eternal questions, Dr. Usui turned to Zen Buddhism, his heart set on unraveling the meaning of life and human existence.

Legend has it that in March of 1922, after fasting and meditating for 21 days atop Mount Kurama, a sacred peak in Japan, a radiant golden light graced Dr. Usui's forehead, rendering him unconscious.

In this suspended state, he was gifted the sacred symbols that now guide Reiki practitioners in channeling its energy. It was also during this transcendent moment that he became a vessel for Reiki's potent healing power.

A Humble Beginning: A Stubbed Toe and a Transformation

The story further weaves itself into the fabric of reality when, after his encounter with divine light, Dr. Usui stumbled upon an ordinary yet extraordinary incident.

As he descended the mountain, he stubbed his toe, and as he instinctively held it, he noticed a profound change: the bleeding ceased, and the pain subsided, all thanks to the Reiki energy flowing through him.

That same year marked the establishment of his practice, the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, a haven of healing. Through his teachings and treatments, Dr. Usui touched numerous lives, passing his wisdom to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, who then illuminated the path for Hawayo Takata - lovingly known as Mrs. Takata - to carry Reiki to the shores of the west, planting its seeds in Hawaii, USA.

A Worldwide Spectrum: Lighting the Way

The legacy of Mrs. Takata reverberates through the ages, as she ignited the spark of Reiki across the Western world. Twenty-two original Reiki Masters emerged from her guidance, each bearing the torch of healing and compassion. This lineage continues to thrive, with every Reiki practitioner tracing their journey back to Dr. Usui, with Mrs. Takata as a vital link in the chain.

In the present day, Reiki's community spans the globe, brimming with practitioners and teachers who embody its essence. Diverse variations and lineages of Reiki and advanced teachings beyond the Reiki Master level have bloomed, enhancing its profound impact.

Yet, amidst these diverse expressions, Reiki's history remains a unifying thread that weaves together practitioners and seekers, forming a global tapestry of harmony and wellbeing.

A Continuous Journey: The Story of Reiki

As the story of Reiki unfolds across time, its energy stands as a beacon of serenity and balance.

This ancient art, with its roots tracing back to the mountains of Japan long ago, continues to flourish in the hearts and hands of Reiki practitioners worldwide. It is an energy that whispers of harmony, peace, and healing, flowing seamlessly through our lives, nurturing us on our journeys toward wellbeing and self-discovery.
