How to Keep Spirits From Disturbing You

It is never the intention of a spirit to bother you or disturb you for its amusement. Spirits communicate with the living through telepathy. This form of mind-to-mind communication relies on thoughts and mental images rather than words. If you allow it, a spirit can influence your thoughts, even your mood. Any physical impact a spirit seems to have on you begins with your mind first allowing it to happen. It is important to remember that spirits with bodies (called "incarnate") and spirits without bodies ("discarnate") exist on entirely different energy and vibrational levels. A discarnate spirit cannot take over someone who has a body - that is something best kept for spooky TV shows and movies.


Can Spirits Influence Your Mind and Body?


You are always in control of your physical body. If an unwelcome spirit bothers you, simply tell it to leave, either aloud or in your mind, and remember that clear intention is key. You might say, “Please leave me alone,” or visualize a protective light around yourself. Others might burn incense or smudge their space.


Personally, I like to say, “Thank you for reaching out to me. Please know I work in this world for Source and for the highest good.”


Can Spirits Influence Your Mind and Body?


When working with spirits, I try to understand their purpose and reasons for them reaching out to me. Are they connected to someone I’m helping? Are they a relative? Do they have a connection to the building or place I’m in?


Most spirits I encounter are linked to my clients. For instance, before a reading, if I think, “I hope I can help X tomorrow,” spirits often show up to prepare messages for loved ones. Spirits plan ahead, knowing when they will have a chance to connect.


If I’m not ready to engage - like when I’m about to go to sleep at night - I mentally let them know and ask them to return later. As a medium, I guide these spirit interactions and decide when they happen, not the other way round.


Recognizing Helpful Spirits in Your Life


In my experience, most spirits mean well and come with good intentions. They might be guides who have protected you since birth or loved ones trying to share a message. I have even connected with relatives I never met in life.


For example, I once dismissed a medium’s mention of “David,” an Australian WWII soldier who died during combat in Papua New Guinea. Later, I asked my paternal grandmother and learned David was my grandfather’s brother, a war hero who was killed by a sniper in the jungle. Discovering his story deepened my connection to him and my pride in our family’s legacy.


Dealing With Unwanted Spirit Attachments


That said, some spirits can feel intrusive and bothersome. I have met clients who feel unsettled by these encounters, often during tough times like relationship breakdown, depression, anxiety, or trauma. Such vulnerable emotional states can attract spirits with similar energy. These spirits don’t control you but may linger within your emotional sphere. They are often well-meaning, though, seeking to help as best they can.


For example, a protective spirit might cause you to second-guess everything, not realizing they are being unhelpful. Explaining the situation and asking them to leave typically works, as most don’t intend to overstay their welcome. The more balanced and confident you feel in your life, the easier it is to keep such energies at bay.


How to Communicate With Spirits Safely


So how can you stop spirits from bothering you? If you sense a spirit, you can also communicate with it. Sensitivity to their energy allows you to recognize their presence in the first place. Calmly, and in a positive tone, ask, “Who are you?” or “Why are you here?”


Meditation or quiet time helps create a peaceful space for this. Sit quietly, breathe deeply, and stay open to subtle signs - goosebumps, tingles, a fleeting thought, or a mental image. Once you understand why they are there, you can decide whether to help them or ask them to leave.


The Role of Meditation in Spirit Communication


If another medium tells you about a spirit attachment, they should also help address it. But if you are unsure about handling these situations alone, consulting a medium or a spiritual therapist can provide clarity.


Living Positively to Avoid Negative Spirit Attachments


The best way to avoid unwanted spirit attachments is by maintaining a positive, empowered life. Spirits are less likely to approach people with high, vibrant energy.


If you are struggling emotionally or feel consumed by negative thoughts, don’t hesitate to seek help - whether from a psychologist, life coach, spiritual counsellor, Reiki master, or even a trusted friend. Addressing your own life challenges not only strengthens your inner peace but also keeps your personal space free of unnecessary spiritual disruptions.
